Prove your humanity

In San Antonio we take our Mexican food seriously, and Chef Johnny Hernandez continuously brings the best to the table. Chef Johnny has been behind some popular restaurants like La Gloria and The Fruteria and I am happy to say he has two new restaurants coming in late August or early September, Burgerteca and Villa Rica. The other night I was able to try some of the new dishes and drinks coming to his restaurants. All I can say is I’ll be rushing through the doors the moment they open. The first items we tried were new additions to The Fruteria menu such as the tequila fundido, a cast iron grilled panela cheese with a tequila fruit compote. This is a MUST! The tacos pescado a la plancha were just as good with a chipotle crema, cabbage escabeche, avocado, cilantro, and red onions. Wash it down with fresh pressed juice or a Fiesta Punch with rum and a hibiscus rim.

Burgerteca, opening in Southtown, will feature items such as the hamburguesa oaxaquena. A flavorful hamburger with mole negro, queso fresca, pickled red onions, and avocado. If burgers aren’t your thing, Villa Rica is his seafood concept with items such as marejada de atun. Some drinks that you might want to try at these locations are the Jicama Sour and Strawberry Mojito.

While you wait for the new arrivals, make sure to visit The Fruteria at 1401 S. Flores St. The restaurant is open between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. You can also visit Chef Johnny’s website to hear more about him and the restaurants he is a part of.
