People from all over San Antonio came together for a community, crowd funding campaign at GS 1221 on Tuesday, May 12 to raise money for Maverick Park’s revitalization and the addition of Maverick Dog Park. For the first time in San Antonio, a revitalization of a city park is being put in the hands of the community.
Beer was flowing, people were talking about the growth of our city, dogs were playfully barking and change was being made. Maverick Park, located at 1000 Broadway, is a park that has been slightly forgotten over the years. Joe Alderete III, Project Manager and District 1 Member for San Antonio Parks and Recreation and Ashley Riley, Asset Manager for AREA Real Estate, saw the potential the park had for the city and decided to bring life back to Maverick Park. This is when the idea of Maverick Dog Park was born.
Since then, an idea became a conversation, a conversation became an event and an event became a movement. The revitalization of Maverick Park isn’t just about our four-legged friends; plans for future phases include an outdoor adult fitness area, children’s playground and public art area. (Yes!)
“The event was a success. It was a community calling for a need and we answered it. We can’t wait to see this project through to show what San Antonio can do,” says Alderete.
We can’t wait either. It was an amazing feeling to be surrounded by people who came together for the same cause – to see San Antonio grow into a more beautiful city.
Along with donations made onsite during the crowd funding event, Alamo Beer matched donations from all Alamo Beer purchases made at the launch party and GS 1221 donated 100% of the evening’s proceeds to Maverick Dog Park. Overall, the event raised $1,500 for Maverick Dog Park.
