Here in San Antonio, we owe a lot to the San Antonio Parks Foundation for all they’ve done and plan to do for the city. The non-profit organization promotes safety, equity, inclusivity, and the ongoing expansion of local parks.
Twenty Something SA was invited to a media preview event where talks of the foundation’s accomplishments of 2022 were highlighted, and the Foundation shared its plans for 2023. Here’s the inside scoop:
In 2023, SA Parks will be focusing on some areas of San Antonio that have been neglected in the past, specifically the South side.
Hidalgo Park in the Southside area will receive a much-needed boost with the help of $300,000 from the approved City Bond program. The Parks Foundation’s primary goal is to provide the city with a park within 10 miles of every neighborhood. I love this idea!
Further, the Parks Foundation highlighted the work of the Food Policy Council of San Antonio and all they’re doing for our community, specifically the Tamōx Talōm Food Forest Project.
A food forest mimics the native ecosystem of the area to preserve the local climate. This project is a space sustained by community members to provide local food, wellness, and environmental sustainability. The food forest is located inside the Padre Country Park that runs alongside the San Antonio River that connects the Missions. Visit Tamōx Talōm for more information!
Opening in the fall of 2023, Civic Park will be San Antonio’s newest park. A public 16-acre park right in the heart of the city will be a perfect addition. There will be courtyards, plazas, an event lawn, gardens and a stage, something for everyone. San Antonio has a rich history of water use and to help tell that story, the fountains and all water running through the park will be recycled water.
And now it’s time to “go all out” at the SA Parks event series this year!
Chaparral Music and Heritage Festival
The 5th annual Chaparral Music and Heritage Festival is set to take place on April 22nd during Fiesta at Hemisfair Park. This event aims to celebrate South and Central Texas Centric heritage and storytelling and includes headliners Asleep at the Wheel and other musical guests Sunny Sweeney, LA 45, and the texases. VIP and premium GA tickets are now available.
Outside for All
Outside for All is an outdoor public gathering where officials, public space stakeholders, and SA residents join to share ideas for parks and other concerns. This is held to understand the community’s needs better. It is also a non-profit showcase where organizations can set up tents and share about the work they do. This year’s event will be held on April 1st at the Japanese Tea Garden.
4th of July Celebration
What says San Antonio more than Woodlawn Lake Park? The official City 4th of July Celebration will be held for the public once more. Festivities will begin at 11 a.m. and through 9:30 p.m. with local food trucks, festival games, vendors, and much more! Stay on the lookout as well for additional activities. Jazz’SALiveThe SA Parks Foundation is proud to announce that the first event held at the new Civic Park downtown will be the 40th annual
Jazz’SALive Music Festival!
Held September 29th through the 30th, this event is the official Jazz Festival of San Antonio. This event has historically been held at Travis Park, and the foundation is honoring that by continuing to keep it there. Both locations will hear the sweet sounds of jazz, with yummy food and many vendors!
Celebrate SA
Last but not least, what’s a better way to ring in the New Year than doing it in San Antonio style? The annual New Year’s Eve countdown Celebrate SA will be held at Civic Park on December 31st and will end with a firework show once the clock hits midnight!
We hope to catch you at one of the many unique experiences the SA Parks Foundation offers to our community. Don’t forget to “go all out!”
