We’re thrilled to share that $11.7 million in improvements are on the cusp of completion on N. St. Mary’s.

As home to a multitude of local businesses, this area in San Antonio has always been quite popular. N. St. Mary’s, also known as the St. Mary’s Strip, is nearing the conclusion of their multi-million-dollar upgrade. The project includes:

  • Widening of sidewalks
  • Improved lighting
  • New pedestrian crossings and traffic signals
  • Benches
  • Covered VIA bus shelters
  • Drive-way approaches
  • 18 on-street parking spaces
  • 4 on-street commercial/passenger loading spaces
  • Bike lanes and vehicular travel lanes
  • Two mid-block crossings
  • Curb extensions to enhance pedestrian safety
  • Joint-bid utilities (gas, sewer, water)
  • Landscaping

Walkability on N. St. Mary’s has always been vital for the safety of the community. Sidewalks are now four to six feet wide, creating a safer space for foot traffic. Improved lighting ensures that the streets are lit throughout the night.

During my visit to the 100-year street, I spent time speaking to the owners of Tycoon Flats, a local business that has been serving the community for 40 years. Malcolm and Richard Hartman, the brothers who own Tycoon Flats, have created a remarkable space that keeps you cool even in the summer months. The shaded patio features trees, an array of plants, and misters. No worries if you want to dine inside, Tycoon Flats also has an extensive indoor seating area.

Malcolm let me know that during COVID, Tycoon Flats did not let go of one employee. This brought me great joy for I know this must have been extremely difficult and it shows their dedication and appreciation for their team. After 40 years, Tycoon Flats will be opening its second location on Austin Highway this year!

When visiting Tycoon Flats, free parking is available in their large parking lot. The business also shares the El Ojo parking lot as well.

If you’ve recently been to N. St. Mary’s there’s a large chance you may have passed by a bright pink building that houses local business, Curry Boys. Curry Boys is where Southeast Asian Curry meets Texas BBQ. Going the vegetarian route? I would highly suggest the Magic Mushroom Bowl complete with marinated button mushrooms smothered in a rich green curry. Oh, and the portions are generous. Curry Boy’s was also recently named the fourth best place to eat in Texas!
