If you haven’t heard of Downstairs at the Esquire Tavern, that’s because the soft opening that took place on September 20th was very soft – just a whisper. This new basement bar provides locals with a hideaway from the tourist hotspot just upstairs. When you enter Esquire from E. Commerce, a staircase lined with candles leads you to Downstairs at Esquire. Intricate wood carvings break up the bar into two dining rooms with just enough light to read the words on your menu.
If I’m in a restaurant, or in this case bar, where I can instantly put my feet up, discard my jacket and feel 100 percent comfortable, I immediately love it. After sinking into a vintage chair, I gazed upon the small creatures that surrounded me. Fish lined the dark browned walls and Jacqueline said it was as if we were underground, sharing the world with the animals that rest beneath sea level.
The signature cocktail list features one of the most unappreciated and oldest grains on Earth – corn. We began the night with the Big Corn Island composed of rums, corn milk, teach and campari. We’re always looking for Insta worthy drinks and this is definitely one of them! Along with the Big Corn, we sipped on the Land Race with purple corn gin.
Booze in a chill atmosphere is usually enough to satisfy anyone, but Downstairs at Esquire took it a step further by adding charcuterie and oysters to the menu. If you’re a fan of meat and cheese, make sure to order the chef’s selection. The glorious selection of cured and dried meat, cheese and savory condiments will keep your taste buds entertained for hours.
